Moisture Redefined: tgin Review

Hi there!

With Winter upon us, or for those of us in the South USA, Summer/Spring, how do our tresses keep up with it all? The temperature is constantly changing, it’s hot, now it’s cold; it’s freezing one minute and too hot to wear pants in the next! What a miracle that our hair doesn’t just give up and fall off our heads! Thankfully, that crown we wear is strong enough for all of us. Even so, we all are made with that instinct to know when enough is enough, and that’s where tgin comes in.

What does tgin even mean? tgin stands for “Thank God it’s NATURAL” a brand that lives up to it’s name and keeps customers running back to stores for more, their products are revered and loved all throughout the Natural Hair community.  They have been featured on many lists that include “Best Deep Conditioner” and the list goes on and on.

I first heard about tgin while perusing Youtube looking for a bomb twistout routine, and fell upon a video from NaturallyNeiicy. I decided to look further into the product and all I could find were good things, and decided I had to have it! Now, as a college student, and for all the students out there, times can get tough, and for a product junkie like myself, how can I keep up with all the hype?

One word: G I V E A W A Y!!!

Thanks to @frogirlginny and an amazing Holiday giveaway, I became the proud owner of three products from the tgin line. (follow her on all social media outlets, btw. she’s amazing!!) Natural ladies and gents, when in doubt to enter a contest of any kind, do not hesitate, just do! I’ve gotten pretty lucky so far! I’ll be sending good vibes your way through it all. I also got another product for Christmas so that will be featured in this review as well.

Honey Miracle Hair Mask – with Raw Honey + Olive oil

tgin-mask

First impressions: The packaging is pleasing to the eye, but not too crazy, so it caught my attention. Anything that says “Miracle” will have me doing a double take because I’m always on the lookout for the next great hair marvel. It smells amazing, the jojoba and honey in the mix truly influence the smell and I was instantly in heaven!

The product is THICK, and when you’re looking for a deep conditioner, trust and believe that consistency is key. My hair is very thick- in the 4b range along with some varying curl patterns, so I was really excited about it. I washed my hair as usual with the OGX Biotin & Collagen shampoo for clarity and bounce, and then followed with the same line of conditioner. My hair was then separated into sections and the fun began here! The directions say to “wash hair and then apply the product liberally to damp hair, raking the product through with a comb to ensure that it’s distributed evenly. ” Then either cover the hair with a plastic wrap and sit under the dryer for 15 minutes, or leave on a plastic cap and sit with product for 35 min – 1 hr. Sadly I don’t own a hooded dryer just yet, so I opted for the hour treatment instead and did some chores and studied for a bit. After 1 hour I washed it out, my hair was moist, the curls had defintion, my hair had a healthy shine, and it smelled so yummy- which is always important.

Twist & Define Cream – With Coconut oil + Vitamin E

tgin-twist

First Impressions- Again, consistency is key, and let me tell you this is just the right amount of oil and creme. It has a lot of slip, it smells like the hair mask, but different,  kinda like a good dessert. There are some elements in this product not found in the other which is good for variety. I like the amount of moisture that it clearly has, and I’m looking forward to the results.

After detangling, I skipped the leave-in step because it seemed like this product had more than enough moisture to go around, and I was right! As soon as it touched my hair my curls went lax, and then sprung to life! I wish this was an over exaggeration, but these are just facts! I was really excited to see the magic happen that quickly, which was satisfying. After applying the product in sections, I twisted the hair in order to keep it contained for the day, and the package does suggest to let the hair dry. After a day, my hair had a good feel to it, it felt almost as if I had applied a gel to it after the define cream.

Butter Cream Moisturizer – With Shea Butter + Vitamin E

tgin-butter

First Impressions- I’m not one who lies to repeat myself, but sheesh! The consistency of this product is what every curly girl wants. If you can think of a hair lotion packed with moisture, that holds firm, but smoothes on contact, this is the one. Of course it smells amazing, but the best part was how it loosened my hair.

Other than the three products that I used from the moisture line of tgin, I used my Mielle Organics Mint Almond Oil for my scalp and to spritz around the hair. Remember how I said my twisted hair felt like gel had been applied to it? The Cream Moisturizer  loosened the twists on contact and pumped hydration and moisture into the hair and allowed untwisting to be easier and made the hair shine even more. I even applied some to the hair at the roots to liven it up!

Argan Replenishing Hair & Body Serum

tgin-serum

First Impressions: I really like the size of the bottle, it makes me comfortable to bring it when I travel or just to leave on the counter without cluttering space. The only thing I’m not thrilled about is the dripping effect- so the bottle does let off a bit of oil if you move it around or even just leave it on it’s side for too long.. which then changes my mind about bringing it to travel. I would have put a cone nozzle on the top instead of the standard lotion head.

This product was given to me as a gift by my lovely sister, not part of the giveaway that I won on Instagram. I use the serum when I want to give my hair some oil before a twist-out, I use it on my body right after I get out of the shower and my body is still a bit damp to lock in moisture. It smells really different, and I think that’s the hibiscus flower at the bottom of the bottle acting with the argan oil. I like that it’s lightweight and smells more natural than perfumed.

The Twist-Out

I used the Argan oil serum in my hands to help loosen the hair and make it easier to untwist and combat frizz. The cream moisturizer was also used in order to add a bit more moisture.

 Final Words

In all, I thoroughly enjoyed this product line ! It really locks in moisture, my hair retains length, and I feel like my hair is healthy and feels good to the touch, (literally it’s so soft) but not in a bad way that it’s dripping in product. My favorite products have to be the Tist and Define Cream and  You can find tgin products at Sally’s, Target, CVS, and online through their website!

Sending another big big thank you to  @frogirlginny for the chance to try these products and a big thank to tgin for making amazing products!

Let me know what else you guys want to see, product reviews, hair products, things of that nature. Or comment and let me know what you think! Peace, love and wishing you many days of flourishing hair!
